South Asian and Southeast Asian Studies Librarian, Area Studies Department, IU Wells Library
Ms. Farrell has both an MLIS and an MA in South Asian studies from the University of Pennsylvania, during which she studied both Sanskrit and Tamil languages. Her studies have been interdisciplinary from the start: for her Bachelor’s thesis she completed research in Sri Lanka on contemporary Buddhist women’s rituals through an AsiaNetwork grant. Her advanced studies covered a greater range of history, from ancient to medieval, while still focusing on women and Theravada Buddhism, including readings of the Therigatha in Pali and Manimekalai in Tamil. As a librarian covering a wide range of countries, subjects, and histories, this background serves to give her a broad based knowledge throughout the humanities. Currently, she is working on web archiving and its importance in the preservation of endangered and lesser-taught languages.
