Proficiency Test

Language Proficiency Testing

SEAS offers proficiency tests for BurmeseIndonesian, and Thai. Proficiency tests can be used to certify language skills for degree/program requirements and other academic or research projects or to demonstrate linguistic competency for employment.

The test is free for Indiana University Bloomington students needing to meet academic requirements. There is a fee for nonstudents or for nonacademic testing.

International students who wish to use their native language (if their native language is not English) to establish foreign language proficiency should complete the Application for Establishment of Foreign Language Proficiency for Non-Native Speakers of English via the College of Arts + Sciences.

Students interested in this option should complete the process as early in their undergraduate careers as possible by submitting the appropriate form to the College.

Please note: Our language offerings may change without notice. It is highly recommended that you schedule a proficiency test as early in your college career as possible.

Test Format

The tests are designed to assess your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. They are administered in a format that meets the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) guidelines.

A passing score means that you have demonstrated proficiency at the level expected of students who have successfullly completed the fourth semester of university-level instruction (equivalent to ACTFL intermediate mid/high or ILR 1+).

You will not receive an official ACTFL, ILR, or other score.

Proficiency tests are held during the academic year in person on the IU Bloomington Campus. Tests are not held during the summer.
