IU Welcomes Woody Myat as the new Burmese language instructor!

We are happy to welcome our new Burmese language instructor for the 2021/22 Academic Year!!!

Here is some info about Kaung Myat (Woody) – our FLTA from Myanmar (Burma).

Kaung Myat (Woody) has got over 10 years of experience in teaching languages. He started teaching English as a foreign language in Shwechinthae Social Services Group, Shwebo in 2011. He was a freelance English teacher while pursuing his master's degree and graduated in 2014.

He became a teacher trainer at the Sagaing University of Education in Myanmar in 2015. He taught English teaching methodologies and English Language Proficiency to prospective teachers in Myanmar for about 4 years. During working there, he was selected as a youth leader of the Myanmar contingent for the 43rd Ship for Southeast Asia and Japanese Youth Program, performing as a cultural ambassador of Myanmar in the program.

In 2019, he was promoted to be an assistant lecturer and transferred to Lashio University, Myanmar. He taught Public Speaking and Presentation Skills and English Language Proficiency to undergraduate students majoring in English. After working for 2 years at Lashio University, he transferred to Shwebo University in Myanmar, which is his native town.

Due to his country’s political conditions, he joined the Civil Disobedience Movement and left his job in May 2021. Then in 2020, Kaung Myat (Woody) received the 2021-2022 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistantship and is currently teaching Elementary Burmese Language Class at Indiana University Bloomington. His interests include hiking, reading, and exploring new places.

The Fulbright FLTA Program is sponsored by the United States Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). As part of the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, the Fulbright FLTA Program is designed to develop Americans' knowledge of foreign cultures and languages by supporting teaching assistantships in over 30 languages at hundreds of U.S. institutions of higher education. The program offers educators from over 50 countries the opportunity to develop their professional skills and gain first-hand knowledge of the U.S., its culture and its people.
